Science Olympiad Wish List - for Tuesday, April 25
Science Olympiad is AWESOME!
What is Science Olympiad?
“An after-school team activity, Science Olympiad is one of the nation's most prestigious and rigorous competitions of science, technology, engineering and math. At both the state and national level, Science Olympiad teams compete in more than two-dozen scientific and engineering challenges on topics ranging from human health, ecology, chemistry, cell biology, geology and engineering. Awards are given for the best overall team score and individual scores in each event. In 2011, the University of Wisconsin-Madison hosted the National Science Olympiad competition, which drew more than 6,000 students, parents and coaches from 47 U.S. states.”

When will I participate in Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad will be held as a Flex Class on red days, so we will meet during school for 40 minutes two or three days each week. We will also be meeting after school on Wednesdays from 2:45-3:45. This will allow us to work on more of the “build events” that require more resources and outside help that may not be available during our school meeting time.
Will we be going to competition?
Yes! At the very least, we will be going to the regional competition in March. We may also decide to attend one or more local invitational competitions before regionals. If we do well enough at regionals, we may advance to the state competition. Details about all of these events will be communicated as we get closer to the dates. These competitions are held on Saturdays.
Who will go to competition?
We are currently registered to send one team of 15 members to competitions. If there is enough interest and skill, we may take an additional 15 member team. Those students who show the most skill, dedication and versatility will be asked to compete. All class members will be able to attend, but most likely not all will have the chance to earn points for the team.
How many events will I need to specialize in?
Each person will need to specialize 2-3 of the available events for this year. In addition, it is important to be familiar with several other events in case there is an illness, scheduling conflict, etc. on the day of competition. Each student will be required to complete at least one “study” event. The student’s other 1 or 2 events can be any of the events.
We are going to have a great time and learn a TON!
Thanks for being a part of Science Olympiad!
